Nights of Cabiria is my favorite Fellini film and possibly one of my favorite all time films. It stars Italian film and stage actress Giulietta Masina - the wife, muse and collaborator of Fellini. The film tells the story of a feisty but nieve prostitute called Cabiria Ceccarelli and her adventures in her pursuit for love. I love Masina's performance in this film. Her facial expressions, body language... as a viewer we go through the characters emotions with her. Her emotions change from sadness and despair to a hopeful contentedness all in one moment. I feel her feelings just through her miming and catch myself following her facial expressions and posture. Her pain and sorrow in her times of solitude, and her moments of ecstatic joy become one with her surroundings. "[...] intense performances of naïve characters dealing with cruel circumstances, Masina is often called the female Chaplin".

Presented by Spare Tyre Theatre co. and devised and performed by HOTPOTS; a company of artists aged 60+. Directed by Isaac Ngugi. Performed as part of Wandsworth Arts Festival and outside the New Diorama Theatre.

Meadowgate Bus Project, Greenwich & Lewisham Young Peoples Theatre, 2011

GLYPT (Greenwich and Lewisham Young Peoples Theatre) worked together with Meadowgate school (special needs primary school) and Door to Door (Lewisham transport provided to take pupils to and from school), to provide an artist on each bus one evening a week. Artists would engage the pupils in various art activities such as developing songs, stories, puppetry, drama and playing musical instruments. My role was to bring a visual art/ design element to the project, which developed into creating multi-sensory installations representing what the children had been doing on their buses, becoming backdrops to various performances for their end of term "Sharing".

The film Hail The New Puritan (1985-86) is a simulated day-in-the-life “docufantasy" directed by the great Charles Atlas and staring dance legend Michael Clark. The song in this clip is "Copped it" by The Fall with costumes by the amazing Leigh Bowery.

Three dancers and one drummer would perform in front of a projection. The projection is of a pair of hands practicing a song on the keyboard. There are mistakes, hesitations and pauses, the hands stop, go back to the beginning, start again. It is repetitive and relentless in its trying to play the song right. A dance is performed to this with all its mistakes choreographed in. The song being practiced is from the film Damnation by Hungarian director Bela Tarr.
It was first performed at Gallery Vilma Gold. Part of a Live Event that I curated with Phoebe Blatton. It was also the launch of Restoration, Issue 5 of The Coelacanth Journal.

This is one of my favorite ever scenes. It possesses a beautiful kind of sadness which makes my heart melt. Hungarian Director Béla Tarr represents feelings of desperation and melancholy perfectly. Damnation tells the story of Karrer, a depressed man in love with a married torch singer from a local bar, the Titanik. The singer broke off their affair, because she dreams of becoming famous. The song is called over and done.

Me, Vincent Larkin and Design A Wave did a re-enactment of one of Toms Dreams at the Utrophia Arts Collective CWM Festival in Wales. The dream was of Tom (performed by Vincent) coming across an orange car that he likes and falls asleep with it. A snake (performed by me) comes along whist he is sleeping and steals the car. Tom wakes up to find the snake dancing away with the car and follows the snake to try to get the car back but at the same time he is too scared of the snake... Photos courtesy of Melissa Osborne

“Heather” is a film by Phoebe Blatton and Alice Theobald, adapted from a short story by Donald Barthelme. It is about a man who visits a pair of sisters (both his previous lovers) who have had a baby, which is presumably his. On arrival, however, they declare that they made the baby together, thus leaving him bewildered. What ensues is a short and absurd discussion revealing the extent of how much, and how little, he is involved in their lives.

Fashion Tutoring at The Watermans Art Centre, Summer 2010

I did five days of fashion and textile tutoring with a young lady in foster care. I taught her weaving, and printing and painting on fabric whilst drawing inspiration from pattern, colour and symmetry found in animal and tribal prints. A bag and t-shirt was produced by the end of the course.
Her t-shirt is the bigger colourful one. Much better than mine... I wanted to take it home!

El Captain Theatre in Hollywood

Originally designed by G. Albert Lansburgh, The El Capitan opened on Hollywood Blvd in 1926 as a legit (live) theatre. Later The Disney company made a deal with Pacific Theatres to pay for a full scale restoration/renovation in exchange for the rights to program the theatre under it's original name but as a Cinema. Theatre designer Joseph Musil was employed to provide an appropriately glamorous look. Musil was first asked to design the El Capitan as a "piggyback" duplex with a second screen in the balcony.

Fashion Workshop at The Watermans Art Center, Autumn 2009

I held a 12 week Fashion Workshop with adults with learning disabilities at the Watermans Art Center, London. At the end we had a Fashion Show where participants modeled their own work and had an exhibition of the designs and textile work they produced. Really nice work was produced!

This is a performance piece which involved mime and dance. It was performed to the song I Only Have Eyes For You by doo wop group The Flamingoes which I asked Tom Hirst (Design A Wave) to do a cover version of and sing live. It was first performed at SLCC (The South London Cultural Centre) as part of A Taste of the Kitchen Sink, a night organised by The Coelacanth Press. I wanted the audience to feel a sense of total immersion.

'A Quarrelling Pair' is an adaptation of a play by Jane Bowles which I made with Phoebe Blatton. The play, originally written in 1946 for two puppets, is an intense study of two sisters, who sit in separate rooms and quarrel endlessly about trivial tasks, the futility of life, and their inextricable bond. Phoebe and I wanted to interpret, align and examine the domestic idiosyncrasy of this female relationship and were interested in creating a piece that could represent the way we understood its existentialist weight yet sardonic wit.

I was Assistant Designer to Jo Paul for this show. I worked on the set and costume design, prop making, set painting and costume sourcing and making. The show toured during summer 2008 to theatres across London and to the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff.

I did styling, costume sourcing/alterations, and made the cowboy shirts for this piece. The Rhinestone Rollers are a unique power wheelchair dancing troupe. Interpreting classic dances in their own extraordinary way – and with tongues firmly in cheek – the Rollers have taken London festivals by storm over the last two years.
They have performed at Dance Nations Dalston in Gillet Square as part of The Barbicans Bite10 Summer season of events, at Liberty Festival 2010/2008 in Trafalgar Square - the annual celebration of deaf and disabled arts, and at the Paralympic Handover in Hackney Town Hall Square.
